Abstract
Synthesis of organoclay from natural bentonite with several surfactants using sol-gel methods has been conducted. The objective of research to modify surface properties of natural bentonite with several surfactants for advance applied like composite, pillared organoclay for adsorbent and catalyst. The kind of surfactants which used on this research are HDTMA (Hexadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium)-Br (bromide), TMA-Cl (Tetra methyl Ammonium Chloride) and PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol). The synthesis has done at 80oC and agitated with hotplate magnetic stirrer for 5 hours. In order to characterize the structure of organoclay that has been synthesized, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption with BET methods were performed. The XRD data showed the effect of surfactant increased inter layer d-spacing of bentonite. The highest inter layer spacing gave by organoclay that HDTMA-Br 0.75% intercalated bentonite. PVA intercalated bentonite have layer spacing same with TMA intercalated bentonite. The pore size distribution of organoclay gave at range of micro pore, with widest surface area and biggest pore volume gave by intercalated bentonite with TMA-Cl 0.75 %.
