Abstract

The use of hand sanitizer gel among the middle-to-higher class society has become a way of life. Lampes (Ocimum sanctum L.) leaves was known to contain the compounds which have antibacterial activities such as essential oils (methyl cavicol), saponins, flavonoids, and tannins. This study aims to formulate the hand gel sanitizer with the lampes leaf aqueous extract as an antibacterial active compound. Gels were formulated in CMC-Na based gel with four lampes extract concentrations of 10.20%, 10.99 %, 11.47% and 12.37 %. Antibactenal activity was assayed with the modified in vivo replica method. Hand Sanitizer "X" in the market which contains active ingredient of 60 %alcohol and 0.1 % lrgasan DP-300 was used as a positive controi. The characteristics of formulated gel was evaluated which were included the organoleptic, homogeneity, specific density, viscosity, flow properties, pH, and antibacterial activity. The characteristics of formu lated gel contained different concentrations of lampes leaves extracts had required characteristics as gel with acidic and alkaline stabilities and pseudo plastic flow properties. The results indicated that all four gels had effectiveness to reduce the number of microbes on hand skin, however no significant differences compared to the gel base and the activities were lower than the activites of gel "X". It can be concluded that the CMCNa- based gel with lampes leaves aqueous extract as active ingredient had no antimicrobial effectiveness to lowering the microbial numbers in hand skin compare to the gel base.
