Abstract
The relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic growth is an ongoing debatable issue in the literature. Economic growth is argued to induce FDI inflows. Likewise, the FDI inflows are believed to stimulate economic growth. As a contribution to the literature, this study examines the causality relationship between these two important variables in the Southeast Asian countries. The Granger causality test is employed to test the FDI-Growth hypothesis. The results show that the causality direction between FDI and growth is varying among countries. For Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, it is found that the causality goes from GDP to FDI, indicates growth induces FDI. In the case of Philipines, the causality direction is from FDI to GDP, supporting the hypothesis of FDI increases growth.
