Abstract

The depletion of fossil fuel has increased the interest to explore several renewable energy sources. Cheese whey is potential carbohydrate rich waste that can be utilized for bioetanol production via fermentation process. The aim of this research is to investigate the dynamic behaviour in the fermentation of waste cheese whey for bioethanol production using Kluyveromyces marxianus (DSMZ 7239) cell as the biocatalyst. The steady state fermentation simulation was conducted prior to the dynamic simulation. The kinetic data for the simulation was obtained from previous research. From the steady state simulation it was found that the optimum hydraulic residence time was 25 hour. The dynamic study was done taking into account the substrate and cell concentration change in the inlet stream. The profiles of the output subjected to the step change in the substrate concentration a few minutes after operation are presented in this paper. The result of this research is particularly important in the design and control of the fermentation operation.
