Abstract

Liver cirrhosis patients have high risk for drug problem, because these patients undergo changes in the morphology of liver fibrosis and results in lowering of liver function, so that drug metabolism becomes impaired and patients are susceptible toxicity. This condition create a problem in the treatment of hepatic cirrhosis and is commonly referred to as drug-related problems (DRPs). This study aims to determine the DRP that occurs in patients with cirrhosis and to know the drug that is most involved in the incident of DRP. The study design used was a non-experimental, with retrospective approach and descriptive analysis of the cirrhosis patients who are hospitalized at Adi Husada Undaan Wetan Hospital Surabaya from January 2011 to December 2011 (1 year). The most DRP that happened in the therapy of hepatic cirrhosis is the selection of inappropriate drugs and drug combinations that are not appropriate. While the DRPs that were not related to cirrhosis therapy is inappropriate drug selection and drug indication that was not clear. The drug that was most involved in DRP was propranolol for cirrhosis-related therapy and proton pump inhibitor for cirrhosis-unrelated therapy. Therefore the role of pharmacists in monitoring and give recommendation for the therapy in cirrhotic patients in necessary to get optimal treatment.
