Abstract
Body dissatisfaction is characterized by one's dissatisfaction or disliking toward his/her body or spesific body parts. The level of body dissatisfaction is determined by how much discrepancy someone felt between his/her real body and prevailing ideal body standards. Although there have been quite a lot of studies concerning body dissatisfaction conducted in women, men, and adolescents, but similar studies are still quite limited in children, especially in Indonesia. Smolak (2002) reported that children had shown body dissatisfaction dan weight concerns. Childhood body dissatisfaction might continue through adolescence. The aim of this study was to find out whether elementary students had experienced body dissatisfaction and whether there were differences in the level of body dissatisfaction in terms of age (nine to twelve years old) and gender. This was a comparative study. The subjects were 31 elementary school-aged girls and boys of the fourth to sixth grade who lived in Denpasar-Bali. The data were collected using questionnaire and statistically analyzed with Univariate Analysis of Variance. The results showed that nearly half of the elementary students experienced moderate (45. 16%) and low (41.94%) level of body dissatisfaction, nevertheless there were few students (6.45%) who experienced high level of body dissatisfaction. In terms of gender, there was significant difference in the level of body dissatisfaction (sig. := .014 < .05), that was girls experienced higher level of body dissatisfaction than boys. Moreover, the result also showed that high level of body dissatisfaction was experienced by girls aged 11 and 12 years old.
