Abstract

At the higher education level, students have many tasks that cannot be separated from reading literature activities, such as English literature. Some of them had difficulty reading the literature because they were unable to understand the content. This leads to these students not to believe in their academic abilities or what is referred academic self-efficacy. Students who have problems with academic self-efficacy will influence their motivation to read English literature. Therefore, the researcher wanted to know the relationship between academic self-efficacy and motivation to read English literature. In this study, researchers developed their own measuring instrumens. The items developed based on theory, such as 3 dimensions of academic self-efficacy (level, strength, generality) and 4 aspects of reading motivation (drive, commitment, initiative, optimism). Based on the analysis test, it was found that the level of validity (CITC = 0,346-0,668 ≥ 0,3) and reliability (Alpha Cronbach = 0,843 ≥ 0,6) on the Self Efficacy Questionnaire and validity (CITC = 0,406-0,719 ≥ 0,3) and reliability (Alpha Cronbach = 0,899 ≥ 0,6) on the Motivation Questionnaire to Read English Literature. This leads to the questionnaires are valid and reliable. Then, the research was quantified by carry out testing on 100 students of the Faculty of Psychology from a private university in the city of Surabaya. The results showed that there was a positive correlation (r = 0.385 and p = 0,000). This means that the higher the student's academic self-efficacy, the higher the motivation to read English literature.
