Abstract

Homosexuals are a minority group ostracized by society in Indonesia. They get stigma and discrimination that resulting in low-self-esteem. This condition is also experienced by adolescent homosexuals. Whereas, self-esteem plays an important role in the process of finding identity in adolescents. Meanwhile, mindfulness training in several studies can increase self-esteem for it fosters greater awareness. Moreover, it can also increase more positive self-understanding. Thus, this study aims to increase the self-esteem of homosexual teen through mindfulness training. This study involved 20 homosexual teens who are members of a homosexual organization. The method employed was quasi-experimental research using a non-randomized one group pre-test post-test design. The self-esteem aspect was measured using the Coopersmith Inventory Self-esteem. The results then were analyzed using Wilcoxon's non-parametric statistical analysis which showed a significance of 0.00 (0<0.05) and Z score of -3.927. The distribution of training participants' data presents that three participants experienced increased by one grade, 12 participants experienced an increase in two grades, and eight participants did not experience any change. This study concluded that most participants had a moderate level of self-esteem caused by social support from members of the organization. This is in contrast with the findings of a previous study which concluded that homosexuals had a low level of self-esteem. This study also found that mindfulness training can improve the self-esteem of homosexual teens.
