Abstract
From 46 geographical indication that registered in the Directorate General of Intelectual Property, only two known from East Jawa, they are Jawa Ijen Arabica Coffee and Sidoarjo Smoked Bass. This number is very small compared with the number of cities in East Jawa with lots of geographical indication, including high, medium, and low terrains. This condition should be a potential modality toward geographical indication diversity. According to Law No. 20/2016 of Trademark and Geographical Indication, coaching and supervision of geographical indication is responsibility of local government, alongside the central one. Provincial government or city/sub-province government could be the party to propose the geographical indication. Therefore, local government is a very important factor in geographical indication protection. Yet, the concept and mechanism of geographical indication seems to be not yet understood accurately by the local government, including how the documents managed in the proposal to register. This affected society representative comprehension who has the products. The phase of post-registration of the Geographical Indication must be calculated from the outset prior to submitting the registration because if not properly prepared, the registration may be revoked. To achieve the successfulness and sustainability of Geographical Indication protection for potential in East Java, it is important to know precisely the unique constraints in each region and the solution to those problems.
