Abstract

Moringa oleifera L. is a local food ingredient that is known to be used as an alternative to improve nutritional status of toddlers. Moringa contains protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals which can meet the nutritional needs of toddlers. This study aims to determine the potential of Moringa oleifera L. to improve the nutritional status of toddlers. The database used in the search for articles, such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed, uses keywords according to the research topic. Article evaluation was obtained using critical appraisal from the Joana Briggs Institute (JBI) and journal reputation assessment. The analysis results obtained 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were of good quality. Of the 12 articles reviewed, 8 articles were quasi-experimental studies and 4 were randomized controlled trial (RCT) designs. Two studies with RCT designs and seven articles with a Quasi-Experimental design showed a significant increase in toddler weight when given Moringa leaves. Four studies consisting of 2 RCT studies and 2 Quasi-Experimental studies showed positive results on the parameter Z-score value after administration of Moringa leaves. One study with a Quasi-Experimental design showed an increase in BMI for toddlers after being given Moringa leaves. Of the 12 studies, only one study showed no significant changes in weight parameters after the administration of Moringa leaves. Giving Moringa leaves in the form of Moringa leaf extract, Moringa leaf powder, or other forms of processed Moringa such as moringa nuggets, PMT BMC Moringa, cookies, biscuits, toddler porridge, and fortified food can increase body weight, Z-score and BMI in toddlers with malnutrition.
