Abstract
Cultural identity indirectly determines a person's health behavior within a particular context. Knowledge is a predisposing factor that can influence cultural identity and health behaviors. Indonesian rural communities have a cultural identity that may influence resident health behaviors. The Village of Duyung, the Regency of Mojokerto, is one example of how the nature of collective culture might influence how residents choose particular lifestyles and medicine-related behavior. This study aims to describe awareness of the principles of a healthy lifestyle, appropriate medicine-related behavior, and the impact of including local language in education/training on knowledge changes in the Village of Duyung. Two activities of a community empowerment program designed to empower the village's residents in health and food security were conducted in July /August 2023. Activities involved training on making liquid antiseptic soap and delivering educational material on ‘DaGuSiBu’. Pre- and post-tests were conducted before and immediately after both activities to test participants’ knowledge. All 23 participants were women (aged 26 to 47 years). As high as 78.3% and 87.0% of participants were unaware of healthy lifestyle principles and medicine-related behavior, respectively. Significant differences were found in knowledge scores of healthy lifestyles and medicine-related behavior before and immediately after the activities. The study's findings suggest similar methods could be used to identify and initiate a strategy to manage problems with healthy lifestyles and medicine-related behavior in similar cultural contexts. However, the method’s mechanism influences cultural identity, and the actual health behavior it produces over a longer time needs further study.
