Abstract

One of the critical developmental tasks for adolescents is career decision-making. Career decision-making in adolescents requires involvement and support from parents. Parents who are involved help their children to achieve mature career decisions; however, parents who are too controlling posted difficulties for adolescents in career decision-making. A parenting model characterized by warmth and supportive ambiance but accompanied by low autonomy is known as helicopter parenting. Therefore, this study aims to determine the role of helicopter parenting on adolescents' career decision-making. This study uses a quantitative non-experimental design. A total of 136 high school students from grades 12 (77 girls, 54 boys, five choose not to answer) were involved as participants. The data was collected through the Helicopter Parenting Instrument (HPI), which aims to measure adolescents' perceptions of upbringing received from their parents, and the Career Decision-Making Indicator (CDMI) scale to measure the perception of career-decision making abilities. The results show that helicopter parenting significantly predicts career decision-making in adolescents, contributing 13%. Specifically, helicopter parenting significantly correlates with several aspects of career decision-making, such as career anxiety, need of information, career salience, readiness, inconsistent information, and external barrier. This study shows that adolescents who are cared for through helicopter parenting tend to experience difficulties in deciding their careers and vice versa. The implications and limitations are discussed.
