Abstract
Dyestuffs are difficult to degrade naturally and could damage the natural ecosystem. One of the dyes commonly used in industry is methylene blue. Various kinds of research on waste treatment methods have been carried out to reduce the impact on the environment. One such technique is membrane separation made from a polymeric material that is easy to prepare and requires a low cost. However, the trade-off between flux and rejection is a common drawback in polymeric membranes. In this study, the combination of polymer and inorganic particles into mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) was developed to overcome the trade-off. This research was conducted to study the morphology of MMMs through SEM and XRD analysis, and study the effect of CNT and methylene blue concentrations in feed solutions on the performance of MMMs with flux and rejection as parameters in the filtration process using dead-end test equipment. SEM results showed agglomeration of nanoparticles due to high CNT concentration and caused larger pores possessed by MMMs. In addition, XRD results showed that MMMs produced CNT peaks at an angle of 26 ° and cellulose acetate peaks at 5 °-10 °, 20 °-25 °, and 40 °-45 °, which expressed that the presence of both cellulose acetate and CNT. The filtration test indicated the mechanism of separation through the MMMs was mainly controlled by methylene blue adsorption by MMMs. Higher concentration of methylene blue leads to a decrease in the permeate flux and rejection with time. In addition, higher concentration of CNT resulted in a decrease in permeate flux and rejection capacity of MMMs.
