Abstract
Diabetes patients who are dissatisfied with conventional treatment sometimes choose to use complementary herbal medicine. Several studies about the use of complementary herbs to determine the user's abilities using the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice (KAP) approach. This study was to determine differences in sociodemographic, knowledge, attitudes and practices between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients who took complementary herbal medicines and T2DM patients who took conventional medicines. This research design, non-experimental cross sectional, was carried out in August 2024 at a Hospital in Malang City. The respondents was 105 patients with a diagnosis of T2DM. Data was collected by using a valid questionnaire. Analysis was done by using the t-test, chi-square and Mann-Whitney test using SPSS 30. The research showed that there were no differences in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups (p≥0.05). Regarding knowledge, respondents who use complementary herbal medicines have more positive knowledge about using complementary herbal medicines there is no need to stop using conventional medicines (p=0.030) but they had a more negative attitude regarding the choice not to discuss with a doctor before using complementary herbal medicine (p=0.007). In practice, there is a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001).
