Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of rice imports on price stability and food security in Indonesia during the 2019–2023 period. A descriptive approach and regression model were employed to evaluate the relationship between rice import levels from five major countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, and India), national rice production, and local rice prices. The findings reveal that rice imports contribute to maintaining price stability and supply when domestic production declines. However, this policy increases dependency on international markets, posing challenges for local farmers' competitiveness. The decline in domestic production, driven by the El Niño phenomenon and land-use changes, was identified as the primary factor behind increased imports. This study recommends holistic policies to enhance national rice production, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure sustainable food security in Indonesia
