Abstract
Parental support plays a critical role in adolescent personal identity development. However, the specific forms of support that are most beneficial to this process remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to identify and validate a scale to measure parental support for adolescent personal identity formation. This study used a mixed-methods exploratory sequential design involving parents with children aged 10–18 years in Indonesia. The first phase of the study included a sample of 169 parents, while the second phase included a sample of 324 parents. In the first stage, data were collected using open-ended questions and thematic analysis found five forms of parental support for adolescent personal identity formation: informational, exchanging thoughts, sharing alternative perspectives, mentoring, and self-development. In the second stage, the developed scale was evaluated for its internal structure which found that it has satisfactory factor structure, internal consistency, and measurement invariance. The findings of this study indicate that the developed scale can be used to measure multidimensional and specific forms of parental support for adolescent personal identity formation.
