Abstract

The automobile sector is transforming with the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), and this necessitates the improvement of steer-by-wire (SbW) systems. The paper presents a comparison of PID control and fuzzy logic control (FLC) for SbW systems in EVs in terms of their ability for tracking accuracy and response time. A PID controller, which is universally used as it is simple, oscillates and is delayed in SbW systems when subjected to nonlinearities and disturbances. FLC, which is designed to control fuzzy data based on human-type reasoning, offers greater flexibility that minimizes response time and increases stability. Experimental results show that FLC performs better than PID control, replicating fewer oscillations and higher tracking precision. The results identify FLC as a promising candidate for SbW systems in EVs. Future efforts must be in the direction of hybrid control methods, machine learning-based tuning, and road testing to enhance SbW technology for autonomous and semi-autonomous EV applications.
