Abstract
Generation Z currently lives amid the rapid development of financial technology and the strong influence of social media. Everything has become increasingly instant: the use of digital wallets and pay-later features can be accessed through smartphones within seconds. However, behind this convenience lies a significant challenge in managing personal finances. Lifestyle-oriented content circulating on social media also shapes how Generation Z makes financial decisions. This study specifically explores how Generation Z manages their daily personal finances, the role of financial literacy in shaping their financial strategies, and how social media influences their financial behavior and decision-making, particularly from a mental accounting perspective. This research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight Generation Z participants. In addition, non-participant observation and document analysis were conducted to strengthen the validity of the data. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes in financial management practices. The findings indicate that Generation Z tends to adopt flexible financial management strategies that adjust to their conditions. They commonly engage in budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt through pay-later features. However, these practices are mostly carried out mentally, without formal written planning. Financial literacy helps establish boundaries in financial management, although impulsive behavior and lifestyle pressures remain significant challenges. Social media plays a dual role: serving as a source of financial education while also encouraging consumptive behavior.
