Abstract
Siri’ culture in Bugis–Makassar society constitutes a collective honor system that positions women as the primary representation of family dignity, thereby shaping regulation of their behavior, mobility, and life choices. Although this value is often understood as a foundation of social respectability, studies that examine young women’s subjective experiences of constraints emerging from it remain limited. This study aims to explore how young Bugis–Makassar women experience and interpret such restrictions in their everyday lives and how these experiences shape their understanding of themselves. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study analyzes in-depth semi-structured interviews with two young Bugis–Makassar women to explore how these restrictions are lived and interpreted in everyday life. The findings indicate that living within siri’ culture is not experienced as a fixed cultural determination, but as an ongoing negotiation through which young women interpret and navigate social expectation social expectation in everyday life. Participants describe developing reflective self-regulation, navigating perceived social surveillance, and constructing their identities between tradition and modernity. These findings highlight women’s lived experiences as a key lens for understanding honor cultures, showing that cultural norms are interpreted and negotiated in everyday life rather than simply imposed. They also illuminate how young women navigate cultural expectations, offering insights that may inform more culturally sensitive approaches to empowerment and dialogue about gender roles in honor-based societies
