Abstract

Women incarcerated for drug-related offenses experience pressures that extend beyond confinement to family separation, stigma, health concerns, and culturally specific expectations. This study examines how Balinese women incarcerated for drug-related offenses experience resilience through the interaction of individual, relational, institutional, family, and socio-cultural resources. Using a qualitative case-study design, the study involved 15 Balinese women at the Women’s Correctional Institution Class IIA Kerobokan, Bali. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation, supported by source triangulation and thematic analysis. The findings show that resilience was not experienced as an individual trait but developed through navigation of accessible resources and negotiation of culturally meaningful ways of responding to adversity. Family support, peer relationships, health services, counseling, productive activities, hope, Karmaphala, and kudiang men concept supported adaptation, while stigma, boredom, health problems, family separation, and anticipated social or customary consequences created pressure. The study highlights culture as a dynamic environment that can simultaneously provide resources and constraints for women’s reintegration.
