Abstract

Purpose: This community service activity aimed to implement circular economy principles by empowering women to reuse textile scraps and transform them into functional plant pots. Methodology/Approach: The activity was conducted in August in Lemahputro Village, Sidoarjo, involving 27 women from the local community. It began with observation and focus group discussion (FGD) to identify participants’ needs, available textile scraps, and interests. The team then introduced textile waste and circular economy principles, followed by demonstrations, hands-on practice, and mentoring. The team actively supported the process by preparing the cement mixture, assisting participants in dipping and arranging textile scraps, and supporting drying. The team observed and documented activities and product outcomes, including follow-up at home. Results: Participants successfully transformed textile scraps into cement-reinforced plant pots, demonstrating a practical circular economy approach by extending the use of discarded materials. They also learned that fabric characteristics affected the quality of cement adhesion. Several participants continued making pots at home, decorated them with paint, and used them for plants. Conclusions: The participatory activity provided a simple and practical approach to implementing circular economy through women’s creativity, material learning, and reuse practices. Limitations: Waste reduction, changes in knowledge, and long-term behavioral impacts were not quantitatively measured. Contribution: The activity provided women with a productive and creative leisure activity that fostered enjoyment and confidence while supporting healthy aging and circular economy practices at the household level.
