Performance comparison of a modified lathe for rotary friction welding of steel and aluminum_published.pdf - Published Version Download (1MB) |
Abstract
Rotary friction welding (RFW) is a solid-state welding method that is very effective for joining dissimilar materials, but its application in research and educational laboratories is often limited by the high cost and complexity of dedicated RFW machines. To address this problem, this study aims to develop a practical and cost-effective electro-hydraulic actuation system that can be integrated with a conventional lathe to provide controlled axial loading for the RFW process, while allowing adjustment and control of the main process parameters. Three main components were designed and developed: a dedicated fixture to hold the joined specimen, a hydraulic power pack system to supply axial loads, and an electronic control unit for regulating axial force and dwell time. The system incorporates a double-acting hydraulic actuator with a 50 mm bore, a 150 mm stroke, and an operating pressure range of 3–200 bar. Welding trials were conducted using SS 304 stainless steel, AISI 1045 carbon steel, and Al 6061 aluminum alloy. The calculated welding efficiencies were 109.8%, 110.5%, and 69.7%, respectively. The efficiencies above 100% for SS 304 and AISI 1045 indicate that the welded specimens achieved higher tensile strengths than the corresponding base metals, whereas the lower efficiency for Al 6061 indicates reduced joint strength.
