Abstract

Sauropus androgynus (Euphorbiaceae) is a well-known Indonesian medicinal herb with high nutrient and antioxidant properties. Developing tissue culture techniques for Sauropus androgynus will permit the application of biotechnology, mainly for producing its green pigment for many pharmaceutical applications. High frequency callus induction was achieved when young leave explants were inoculated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 mg/L α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 0,5 mg/L benzyl adenine (BA). The callus induced on this medium was friable and green in color and of high quality compared to that produced on other medium supplemented with another growth hormone. Further research should be concentrated on transferring the callus culture into cell suspension culture for obtaining high yield of green pigment from Sauropus androgynus.
