Abstract

A student’s learning orientation, or the reason that motivates one to study, is one affective dimension known to influence the quality of learning. While the relation between learning orientation and quality of learning is well established, there are reasons to suggest that this relation might be dependent on context. To investigate this issue, the current study surveyed students enrolled in three courses (Cognitive Psychology, Observation/Interview, and Personality Assessment) assumed to represent different academic contexts (N = 173). The participants were asked to complete a ques- tionnaire measuring five different learning orientations. Academic performance was measured using grades from specific tasks, quizzes, and exams in each of the courses. Results show that that the kind of learning orientation which predicts academic performance differs, depending on the context.
