Abstract
A Cognitive based Mathematical Giftedness Model proposed by Tjahjono (2016) found that mathematical giftedness was constructed by six cognitive factors including: number recognition, math-fact retrieval, mathematical abstraction, mathematical visualization, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical thinking flexibility. This research was aimed to compare the six cognitive factors underlying mathematical giftedness between gifted and non-gifted students from 4 to 6 grade primary school in Surabaya. Thirty mathematically gifted students (those who has very high level score in Cognitive Based Mathematical Giftedness Test and has achieved top ranks in some mathematics competitions in local, national, dan international levels) were compared to thirty students with high ability in mathematics (those who has high level score in Cognitive Based Mathematical Giftedness Test). Independent-sample t-test from both groups found significantly different mean scores between mathematically gifted and non-gifted students in number recognition (t= 5.706, p=0.000), math-fact retrieval (t= 20.484, p = 0.000), mathematical abstraction (t= 3.830, p = 0.000), mathematical visualization (t = 5.104, p = 0.000), mathematical reasoning (t = 6.639; p = 0.000), and mathematical thinking flexibility (t = 7.90, p = 0.000). Mathematically gifted students showed higher scores in all of six cognitive factors underlying mathematical giftedness. In number recognition and math-fact retrieval, mathematically gifted students has 119.91 mean score (standard deviation of 4.691) compared to 111.85 mean score of the non-gifted students (standard deviation of 6.158). Mathematical abstraction score of the mathematically gifted group was 119.07 mean score (standard deviation of 7.631) compared to 110.10 mean score for the non-gifted group. In mathematical visualization, mathematically gifted group has 124.43 mean score (standard deviation of 6.176) compared to 115.71 mean score for the non-gifted group (standard deviation of 7.038). In mathematical reasoning, mathematically gifted group showed 126.19 mean score (standard deviation of 6.423) compared to 115.21 mean score of the non gifted group (standard deviation of 6.379). In mathematical thinking flexibility, mathematically gifted group’s mean score was 134.5 (standard deviation of 8.429) compared to 117.12 mean score of the non-gifted group (standard deviation of 8.6).
