Abstract

Adolescents who live in orphanages have a greater risk of experiencing social anxiety problems than adolescents who live with their families. This study aims to examine the relationship between social comparison and social anxiety, with self-esteem as a mediator in adolescents aged 13-18 years who live in orphanages. The population of this study were all adolescents living in orphanages in Sidoarjo. The sample used was 124 teenagers, using a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used the social anxiety scale (α=0.93), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) (α=0.812) and the Iowa Netherland Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) (α=0.84). The data were processed by mediation analysis using the JASP statistical program version 0.14. As a result, self-esteem may act as a mediator in the relationship between social comparison and social anxiety in adolescents living in orphanages (p= <0.001). In the absence of self-esteem mediation, social comparison did not have a significant relationship with social anxiety (p = 0.914> 0.05).
