Abstract

The romance story of Panji Asmorobangun and Dewi Sekartaji has spread to various regions in Java (Indonesia) for a long time, even to the Southeast Asia regions and other parts of the world. Panji stories are fictitious and have multi-interpretations. Many researchers, archaeologists, and historians have studied these stories, and to preserve them, many cultural agents with government support have conducted numerous cultural activities that penetrated the creative economy sector. Several characters in the panji stories have manifested in comics, action figures, and many lifestyle products. However, to date, there has been no design for developing them in the form of jewellery. This study aimed to design and produce a silver jewellery product, a bracelet, inspired by and embodied with the romance story of Panji Asmorobangun and Dewi Sekartaji. The design and story’s embodiment employed the Transforming Tradition theory to interpret the transformation product with the ATUMICS (Artifact-Technique-Utility-Material-IconConcept-Shape) method as the controlling parameter. The main principles of the ATUMICS method include settings, combination, and integration of the basic elements of tradition and modernity. The final products were the unique design and production of a silver bracelet with ornaments resembling the iconic styling of the relief at Candi Kendalisodo that pictures the love union of Panji Asmorobangun and Dewi Sekartaji. This study concluded that the produced silver jewellery could be further developed for another unique design and used to preserve the panji culture for the younger generation.
