Abstract

This study examines the tradition of Thanksgiving (Pengucapan) in the Minahasa community, North Sulawesi, through the lens of Gratitude Theory. The purpose is to explore how this tradition, rooted in agricultural practices, fosters individual well- being and social cohesion. Utilizing a literature review methodology, this research synthesizes existing studies on Minahasa’s cultural practices and the psychological benefits of gratitude, particularly those outlined by Emmons and McCullough. The findings reveal that while Pengucapan originated as a harvest celebration, it has evolved to encompass all forms of livelihood. This practice, which includes public expressions of gratitude through rituals and communal gatherings, not only strengthens ties within the community but also enhances the psychological well- being of individuals. The study highlights that collective gratitude, as part of this tradition, has a positive impact on both personal and communal health. The novelty of this research lies in applying Gratitude Theory to a cultural ritual, offering new insights into how traditional practices can contribute to mental health and social solidarity. Future research may explore the broader implications of gratitude practices across various cultural contexts..
