Abstract

Cangkruan, a traditional East Javanese form of informal social interaction, functions as a communal space fostering relaxed communication and collective connection. Despite its deep cultural roots and potential to enhance psychological well-being, this practice faces decline amid modernization and rising urban individualism. Previous studies have mostly addressed cangkruan from sociological and anthropological perspectives, leaving its psychological dimensions underexplored. This study aims to investigate the meaning and psychological benefits of cangkruan through the lens of cultural psychology and key psychological frameworks, including Self-Determination Theory, emotion regulation, cultural coping, and sense of community. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were obtained from in-depth interviews with three active participants and supported by literature review. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative model. Findings reveal that cangkruan serves as a space for stress relief, emotional acceptance, and freedom of expression, while providing both emotional and instrumental social support. It satisfies the three basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—outlined in Self-Determination Theory. Moreover, cangkruan supports emotion regulation through shared experiences and humor, operates as a culturally rooted collective coping mechanism, and strengthens a sense of community belonging. Theoretically, cangkruan emerges as a meaningful cultural practice that fulfills core psychological needs and enhances well-being through social connectedness. In the context of urban individualism, preserving cangkruan as a living social tradition represents an essential cultural strategy to sustain community cohesion and promote collective psychological resilience in modern society.
