Abstract

Limited information and poor parental knowledge about gifted education are influencing educational and social provisions for gifted children in Surabaya. A lot of parents choose the trial and error approach to help their gifted children actualizing their giftedness. In May 18th 2002 a parent support group, named the Adhipurusa Parent support group pioneered by University of Surabaya was established. Its aims are to enhance parents' understanding about giftedness and facilitate parents to develop their child's giftedness. This is achieved by giving seminars about gifted education, providing training about thinking skills or handing emotional problems of the gifted child. There are 40 parents of gifted children under ten years old who have joined. Obstacles that have to be overcome are encouraging members to be assertive in the sharing group, limited resources, and a limited number of experts or competent people who can share their knowledge about giftedness.
