Abstract

The utilization of natural resources and waste for alternative energy sources has been current important issue as the fossil fuel reserves keeps declining. Coconut coir belong to food waste that has high carbohydrate content and therefore can be used for fermentation substrate to produce biofuel such as bioethanol, which is a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative energy source. In this research, ground and alkaline pretreated coconut coir was hydrolyzed enzymatically using two commercial cellulase enzymes. The hydrolysis condition was at 50oC and pH 4.8 achieved by using sodium citrate buffer solution. The solid concentrations were varied as 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 1, and 2 gr/100 mL solution. Hydrolysis time was also varied from 2 to 72 hours. First order dynamic model was used to represent reducing sugar batch production. Having been modeled, the reducing sugar production data were used to obtain Michaelis- Menten kinetic parameters. The values of the parameters are 2,795 1/jam for Vm and 2,452.104 mg/L for KM.
