Abstract

The limited availability of natural fiber sources makes durian peel waste an alter-native source of natural fiber. The characteristic of durian peel waste which is mechanically strong enough has the potential to be developed. During the durian season, the amount of durian consumption by the community increases so that the amount of durian skin waste produced will also increase. This increase raises en-vironmental problems. Therefore, research was conducted to study the potential of durian peel fiber as a source of textile fiber. The research was carried out by carrying out several stages of the process including physical and mechanical ini-tial treatment, followed by a chemical delignification process using an alkaline so-lution. The crude fiber obtained is then bleached and dried and tested for textile fiber applications. Tests carried out included analysis of fiber content using the Chesson-Datta method, dimensional analysis using Scanning Electron Microsco-py, strength, elongation and fineness (micronaire) analysis. From the results ob-tained, from several parameters for textiles, because durian skin fiber is a rough and brittle fiber, durian skin fiber is not suitable for clothing fiber applications, although it is still possible to use it for other textile applications.
